Admission Requirements

These are considered the minimum admission requirements for both the single-degree and all double degree options. However, some double degree options have additional admission requirements beyond what is stated. As such, you are strongly encouraged to carefully read the details pertaining to each double degree option.

Admission to this program is highly competitive. Simply meeting the admission requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the program.

Academic Requirements

We are seeking exceptionally motivated candidates who have demonstrated academic excellence; possess an international outlook; are accepting of and sensitive to other cultures; possess strong communication skills; have exhibited leadership, or leadership potential; have displayed integrity and a strong sense of ethics; possess superior communication and interpersonal skills; and enjoy working in a team environment.

Successful candidates typically present one of the following educational profiles:

  • A bachelor’s degree in business from an accredited university with an average of B+ (approximately equivalent to 75%) or better in the final two years of their degree.
  • A bachelor’s degree in any discipline from an accredited university with an average of B+ (approximately equivalent to 75%) or better in the final two years of their degree.
  • At a minimum, these candidates must have successfully completed introductory business courses in the following areas:
    • Financial accounting
    • Macroeconomics
    • Introduction to finance
    • Introduction to marketing

Please note that most Double Degree options require candidates to possess a bachelor’s degree in business to be considered for admission. Please carefully review the specific admission requirements for each Double Degree option prior to beginning your application to avoid disappointment.

Work Experience

As Smith's Master of International Business is a pre-experience program, candidates are not required to possess work experience, however we have many successful applicants each year who possess full-time post-graduate work experience.

GMAT or GRE Score

  • Candidates who have a bachelor’s degree in business but who have not achieved a result of B+ or better in the final two years of their degree may be required to write the GMAT and achieve a minimum overall score of 600 (565 Focus Edition) or may be required to write the GRE and achieve a minimum overall score of 315.
  • Candidates who have a bachelor’s degree in business but who have not achieved a result of B+ or better in the final two years of their degree may be required to write the GMAT and achieve a minimum overall score of 600 or may be required to write the GRE and achieve a minimum overall score of 315.
  • Candidates who have a bachelor’s degree in a non-business background will be required to write the GMAT and achieve a minimum overall score of 600 (565 Focus Edition), or GRE of 315.
  • You will not be penalized for having written the test on multiple occasions. We will take your best score when considering your file.
  • While most successful candidates have GMAT scores in excess of 600 (565 Focus Edition) or GRE score of 315, we may consider otherwise exceptional applicants with scores below this level.

Language Requirements

Smith's Master of International Business is an intensive program. Each student must be able to synthesize large amounts of verbal and written information efficiently; review, comprehend and critique abundant readings; command leadership of their team when required; engage in classroom discussions and presentations; and author team assignments. Consequently, all candidates must possess exceptional English facility and communication skills to be competitive for admission.

Candidates whose native language is not English, and whose undergraduate university studies were taken in a language other than English must achieve a satisfactory score on one of the accepted tests of facility in English.

Candidates whose native language is not English but who have earned a university degree from a degree program in which English was the language of instruction will be exempt from this requirement.

Please note that some double degree options require candidates to take additional language courses as part of the partner university degree requirements. In addition, some double degree options require candidates to possess proficiency in a language other than English as part of the entrance requirements for that double degree option. Please carefully review the specific admission requirements of each double degree option prior to beginning your application.

Examinee’s score records, faxes or photocopies are not acceptable. Each applicant is responsible for making arrangements to take any of these tests and for all costs that are incurred with the writing of any of the tests.
