Outgoing Winter International Exchange: Next Steps
November 2023
It is advised that students download the International SOS app on their phone before they depart for exchange.
Exchange is an exciting time, but we also understand that this may be the first-time students will live overseas by themselves. Therefore, in addition to the exchange offices at our partner schools, the Centre for International Management, Commerce Program Office, and other Queen’s student support services remain on hand as resources to students before they depart and throughout their time away.
Before embarking on their exchange term, students need to:
- Satisfy the Off-Campus Activity Safety Policy (OCASP)
- Complete the Decolonizing Global Engagement Module
- Submit their application to their host university
- Book their accommodations and flights
- Secure any needed student visas and study permits
- Ensure their courses and the course load is approved through ECAS, our online course approval system. All students must take the equivalent of 15.0 Queen’s credits on exchange. For further details, students should refer to the Outgoing Exchange Portal, which outlines the academic requirements on exchange.
- Download the International SOS app and familiarize themselves with the services provided.
Should your student have any questions or concerns during their exchange, we encourage them to reach out to our office for assistance. Contact the Centre for International Management at smithexchange@queensu.ca
As your student prepares for exchange make sure they log in to the SmithConnect platform and engage with students and alumni Exchange Ambassadors on the Smith Exchange Alumni Network (S.E.A.N) There are Smith Alumni who have chosen to represent their exchange locations and support current Smith students through their exchange journey while helping to ensure your student gets set up to make the most of their exchange experience!
