Advice for Students About to Enter Fourth Year
Most students enter fourth year with mixed emotions. They may be excited to enter the next phase of their life, nervous about the future, and feel sentimental about nearing the end of their university experience.
Students in fourth year may continue to devote their time to extra-curricular commitments they have been involved with since their first year, or they may decide to try something completely new. Remind your student they still have the freedom to explore.
Your student may start fourth year with a job offer already in hand, or they may be looking for career opportunities. Either way, the Career Advancement Centre is there to support them.
Encourage your student to solidify their network in their last year. Their fellow students, professors, coaches, and advisors can continue to be valuable resources as they begin their career. Students can join SmithConnect to stay in touch.
Remember that, similar to first year, fourth year is a time of transition. Encourage your student to enjoy their last year, but remember they may be anxious about their life post-graduation. If this is the case, students can reach out a Career Coach, Academic Advisor, or a Commerce Mental Health Counsellor to talk about the next phase of their journey.
